In 1873 Camillo Golgi published an article that contained the description of entire nerve cells stained in black with a new histological procedure, the black reaction. He subsequently organized all the observations made with this method in a book published in 1885. On the basis of these studies, Golgi developed a physiological model of the brain that was influenced by a holistic conception he had in mind. He named this theory diffuse nervous network, assuming that the axonal prolongations were fused (or intimately interlaced) in a diffuse web along which the nervous impulse propagated. One of the scientists who quickly understood the importance of Golgi's results was the Spanish anatomist Santiago Ramón y Cajal. However, when he studied the brain with the black reaction, he had in mind the idea of the nerve cells as independent "units" (named neurons by Waldeyer, 1891). Thus Ramón y Cajal quickly became the champion of the neuron theory that paradoxically developed thanks to the same black reaction used by Golgi for the formulation of the opposite diffuse nervous network theory. The controversy between Golgi and Ramón y Cajal represents a dramatic instance of a theory-driven perception of the same morphological evidence.

Tout tableau est un fragment. Mais qui, du cadre ou du mur, construit le lieu de la peinture ? Que s’est-il passé lorsque cette énigme occidentale fut confrontée à l’époque moderne à une autre représentation du monde ? Si l’Europe des Lumières est souvent caractérisée par les chinoiseries et l’ornement rocaille, c’est un nouveau regard sur l’Extrême-Orient qui est analysé ici, celui qui lie l’histoire du tableau à une idée de l’espace transmise par les décors des objets venus d’Asie. Dans quelle mesure la présence réelle ou fantasmée de l’Orient a-t-elle modifié le rapport de la peinture au support qui la donne à voir ? Tel est l’objet de ce livre qui présente le changement de paradigme dans la construction du goût suscité par les notions orientales de paysage, de lointain et de vide, pour que le sort de la peinture se transforme. D’où vient la place particulière qu’elle acquiert au xviiie siècle ? De quelle façon fut bouleversée son exposition pour qu’elle devienne le tableau que nous connaissons aujourd’hui ?

View paper →Visibility as Resistance by Muslim Americans in a Surveillance and Security Atmosphere

Based on ethnographic data on South Asian Muslims in Los Angeles and analysis of publications of the largest Muslim organization in North America, this article shows how Muslim Americans manage their hypervisibility in the post-9/11 security atmosphere, which has intensified after ISIS terrorist attacks at home and abroad. At the individual level, Muslim Americans try to distance themselves from the "Muslim" label, which associates them with "terrorists." Instead, many self-categorize into the seemingly more favorable "moderate" identity, which could sometimes render Muslims politically passive. Contrastingly, Muslim organizations strive to construct a "Muslim American" identity that can allow Muslims to engage in mainstream politics by reframing Islam as compatible with American values. Theoretically, this article engages with the scholarship on security, surveillance, and visibility to show how the observed's visibility is not always only repressive but can also be used to resist imposed categories. However, findings reflect how the racialization of Muslims and the security regime give these strategies a double edge—while providing some advantages, these do little to dismantle Muslims' hypervisibility and the security atmosphere. Overall, findings shed light on the contemporary issue of Muslim identification—not just in terms of how others see Muslims but also how Muslims see themselves.

<jats:p>Unrest is the story of diagnosis and partial recovery: part detective story, part autobiography, and part documentation of an illness-based social movement. While conducting research on her own worsening symptoms, filmmaker Jennifer Brea learns that she is not as unusual as she has been led to believe. Unrest calls upon its audience to respond to Brea's ordeal and, in the spirit of all political film, to do something about the social injustice and human suffering it presents. Through her careful attention to the historical context of her own illness, Brea admirably makes visible the deep misogyny of the medical establishment.</jats:p>

View paper →Aurangzeb as seen from Gujarat: Shi‘i and Millenarian Challenges to Mughal Sovereignty

This article argues for a re-evaluation of the ‘Islamist’ policies of the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb ‘Alamgir (r. 1658–1707), many of which were arguably harsher towards Shi‘i and millenarian groups than towards Hindus. By charting Aurangzeb’s trials of millenarian leaders throughout his long reign, it suggests that the emperor’s desire to introduce a more standardised legal system was at odds with the ‘millennial’ nature of his own kingship. The article further suggests we should look more closely at the influence of regional politics on Mughal policy-making. The fact that Sunni Gujarati clerics acquired a remarkable intimacy with Aurangzeb, both as prince and emperor, demonstrates how Gujarat’s sectarian disputes and political economy could play out in the imperial court. Finally, the article calls for a realistic reappraisal of the long shadows cast by Aurangzeb’s Islamist legalism.

This essay reads Nick Joaquin’s The Woman Who Had Two Navels using the critical templates gleaned from gothic studies and queer theory. The essay explores the idea of doubling and monstrosity and demonstrates how these two gothic tropes are deployed to activate the queer potential found in the character of Connie Escobar. The essay builds on an existing interpretation of the novel—that the narrative is an account of regeneration—and extends this by arguing that this narrative of transformation is mobilized precisely by a rejection of heteropatriarchal narratives encoded in the novel’s postcolonial world, mobilized in a particular way by the creation and undoing of an imagined bodily monstrosity performed and sustained through a gendered worlding.
