Abstract
The relationship between International Relations (IR) theory and diplomacy has largely been one of mutual neglect. Diplomacy has not figured prominently in inter‐paradigm debates. The first debate concerned the realist challenge to idealism. Whereas idealism put more trust in international law and international organization than in diplomacy as vehicles to achieve lasting peace, in realism diplomacy is included among, and is dependent on, other, more material state capabilities. Diplomacy figured marginally, if at all, in the behavioralism vs. traditionalism debate or in the discussion about grand theory between neorealism, neoliberalism, and Marxism. The English School has laid a theoretical foundation for the study of diplomacy. Post‐positivist theorists, often drawing on the legacy of the English School, have opened up for new perspectives on diplomacy. Negotiation, an essential element of diplomacy, is the subject of middle‐range theorizing.
