Asexual and Aromantic Perspectives on the Representation of Asexual and Aromantic Desire, Sexual and/or Romantic Behaviors, Identity Development, and Community | ScholarWorks
This project utilized empirical research to construct a theatrical script focusing on asexual and aromantic people's experiences and perspectives. Using a focus group method, participants discussed their experiences with desire, dating, sex, and the asexual community and shared their perspectives on asexual and aromantic media representations, as well as what kinds of representations should be presented in the performing arts. The data collected from the focus groups was used to generate a script for theater production, using a performance ethnography approach and weaving in participant input throughout the playwriting process. Taking direction from the asexual community, the purpose of this script is to produce a community-centered representation of asexual and aromantic people's experiences that accounts for their frustrations with asexual erasure and misrepresentation in the media and performing arts and centers the diversity of asexual and aromantic experiences. This script adds to the overall canon of theater that is explicitly about asexuality, creating more representation for the asexual community. If this play is ever performed, it has the potential to challenge allosexual (non-asexual) audiences' understandings of sexuality by educating them about asexual people's experiences.
