Abstract
Recently India has experienced an upsurge in sexual violence against women. Many of the victims/survivors whose accounts have made it into the headlines are from less privileged or upwardly mobile segments of Indian society. We take a different approach to make sense of the trend by examining the potential linkages between recent socio-economic changes and rising violence against women, with particular emphasis on rape. This paper reflects upon women's social standing within the context of economic changes and explores empincal trends pertaining to crimes against women. In the end we try to hung our theoretical and statistical considerations together to reflect upon the reasons for India's recent rise in crimes against women.
